Rhylo or Railo

According to Michael Offner-Streit (Railo CTO) at the Railo user Group:

“Railo is the name of the first alien dog ever seen in Star Trek. His name is Rhylo and because my english is not very good I have written it wrong, Sorry ;-)

Which leads to an interesting question:

How do you pronounce Railo?

  1. James Allen says:

Well Gert pronounces it like you would the Star Trek dog: Rhylo.
So we ought to follow suit, although I keep calling it: rail-o.
Thanks for the post – good to know where it came from..

  2. Mary Jo says:

Is that the actual photo of the dog on the show? Too funny, that’s a Chinese Crested, an AKC recognized breed of dog. Funny that they didn’t just find a weird-looking mixed breed instead….but I guess most people have never seen a CC and they are certainly unusual, at least the hairless variety!

  3. Gary Funk says:

I would offer up Episode 5 of the orginal Start Trek, “The Enemy Within” show Kirk holding an alien dog.

  4. In German, “rai” is pronounced “rhy” so Railo should have been called Rhylo but in German Railo is pronounced Rhylo and so that’s how we’re trying to get folks to pronounce it. Except Mark Drew. Although he pronounces it both ways in the same sentence some times!

  5. Gerald Guido says:

Soooo… My blog is powered by an app server named for hairless dog from a Star Trek episode?
This is one of those rare occasions where I am truly at a loss for words.

  6. @Marcos, Germans – and the Swiss – are not known for joking around :)

  7. James Allen says:

@Sean, Gert is the last person I’d ever consider ‘messing’ with.. :)

At SOTR after everything was over he insisted he show me something which failed during the Railo presso. His intensity to ensure I saw it working was, well let’s just say intense.. ;)

  8. as long you use it, you can pronounce it like you want ;-)

@Marcos/Sean we swiss people are the most funniest people in the world eating cheese and chocolate all the time.

@Gary in real world you are right, but in the Star Trek timeline at least it was the first ;-)

by the way, every Railo version get a name of a famous dog, railo 3.1 name is “Barry” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_(dog)), Barry is pronounced … ;-) .

we are open for inputs for railo 3.2 :-)
number one at the moment is Greyfriars Bobby (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greyfriars_Bobby)

    greetings micha

  9. @Mary Jo: It is indeed. And it looks kinda alien for me anyway :-)

    @Gerald Guido: So is mine… Railo’s a dog! :-)

@Sean Corfield: that bit I didn’t know. So I guess Mitcha wasn’t joking too much on his post. I have to admit I’m with Mark Drew and @James Allen here, as I also pronounce “rail-o” most of the time ;-)

  10. @Gareth Arch Pretty much ;-)

@James Allen We all know how Gert likes to prove his point :)

  11. Gareth Arch says:

So it’s pronounced rye (like the bread) not ray (like the Camden)

  12. I wonder how a cat person like Sean feels about Railo builds being named after dogs. ;)

  13. Now that’s some culture on dogs huh @Mary Jo.

Btw.,… Cujo still gives me the shivers :-P

  14. Mary Jo says:

Oh I have both the book and movie for Greyfriars Bobby. Bob is a popular dog name in fiction, I remember loving Bob, Son of Battle and Lochinvar Luck with a dog named Bobby by Albert Payson Terhune. Terhune wrote over 20 books on collies and other dogs…some good names from his books would be Lad, Treve, Bruce, Buff, Chips. Other famous dog names in literature that might work…Buck (Call of the Wild), Nop (Nop’s Trials) Joe (Beautiful Joe), Cujo, Rowf and/or Snitter (The Plague Dogs) From movies and TV, I can remember there’s Einstein and Copernicus(Back to the Future), Jack (Little House), Frank (MIB), Benji, Wishbone, Spuds Mackenzie, Ubu (not sure of the show, but remember it was the clip at the end “Sit, Ubu, Sit!”, many more I’m sure. Of course, there’s my own semi-famous TV dog Taz too! (click my link to view him in action).
